So Close…My Least Favorite Week…and Learning English Can Be Funny
From Kurt…
So Close….
What a game on Saturday…so close…so freakin’ close. What a fantastic fight.
What a heck of a great game…Vandenberg was a stud. That was a tremendously gutsy performance…well done to him. NOTE: Is his mom only like 37? She looks fantastic. Is he really 19 years old? He looked like he was 14…but played like a 27 year old.
McNutt is a McStud….and DJK’s kickoff return was AWESOME. Vandenberg, though…wow.
I’m already tired of all the hindsighters (I’m looking at you Sean Keeler…go back to covering the Cyclones, that’s who you really want to cover anyways…you love to be negative) who are all over Ferentz for not being more aggressive at the end of the game. I’m totally with Ferentz on this one…our defense has been winning us games all year long…let’s go to overtime and put it in their hands. Vandenberg had one “rookie mistake” all game long, and unfortunatley it happened in OT….our defense held the Suckeyes to a field goal, 4/5 times, you win OT if you hold them to a field goal.
Besides all the armchair QBs after the game…the only thing that annoyed me during the game was that they showed the same Suckeye female fan holding roses about 6 times. Seriously…couldn’t ABC have found at least ONE other person that was holding roses to film? For the record…those didn’t even look like roses…they looked like carnations.
Bottom line…it’s still been and will continue to be an amazing season. Losing out on the Rose Bowl is a bummer…but Florida or Arizona (there’s still a teeny, slight chance to make it to the Fiesta Bowl) is still a fantastic accomplishment.
Let’s go take out all the frustration from the past two weeks..and deliver it squarely on the heads of the Gophers…just like we did last year. I wonder if Lois Feldman (the cougar that got caught having sex in the bathroom up in the Metrodome last season) will be making a return appearance!
I’d congratulate the Cyclones for becoming bowl eligible, but out of spite, I will not…too many Cyclone fans have found pleasure out of the past two weeks. It’s okay to find happiness in the Hawkeyes….get over it.
Learning English Can Be Funny -
This video proves it…
One of My Least Favorite Weeks -
This week on NBC…it’s “Green Week”. It’s one of my least favorite weeks of the year. Every show…every joke…has some “green” element to it. Jokes about the environment…about how Mother Nature is cranky…all the jokes are about recycling….even in Law&Order, the clues are all recycled. On the other hand…it’s a normal week for Jay Leno…all of his material is normally recycled anyways….ohhh snap!

Watch “The Biggest Loser” on Tuesday night…I guarantee you that Jillian will have a two-minute speech about how losing weight helps the environment. Sounds ridiculous right? You just wait and see.
Men Who Stare At Goats -
As I was recovering from the Hawkeyes loss….Jennifer and a few of her friends went and saw “The Men Who Stare at Goats”. When this movie first came out, I was the one who really wanted to see it…Jennifer didn’t want to…she thought “George Clooney looks annoying”. Of course, it’s Jennifer who sees the movie. She gives it neither a thumbs up nor a thumbs down…it was just sort of a “hanh” movie.
Good Eats Sunday -
So this was the menu for Sunday-Football-Watching-Day. Jennifer prepared a delicious pork loin…roasted garlic twice baked potatos…and then for dessert, an Oreo Cheesecake. It was all AWESOME. Note: I no longer weigh 205…I”m up to 207.
Oh, for breakfast, she made whole wheat pancakes. They were very good…but buttermilk pancakes still reign supreme.
Enrique Iglesias Lip-Synchs-
Britney Spears’ fans are upset that she’s lip-synching…but fear not…as Enrique Iglesias proves, she’s not the only one who does it!
Credit Cards -
Thankfully, Jennifer and I got all our credit card bills paid off during the summer. Not having a credit card bill is AWESOME. Especially now…I can’t believe what some of these credit card companies are doing. 23% interest? That’s insane…people should be ticked. Especially in times like these…money is hard to come by. I’m not giving a pass to people to not pay their bills, but it’s ridiculous to hike up interest rates like that. How’s anyone supposed to be able to get out of debt? Win the lottery? I’m livid, and we don’t have credit card bills to pay…my blood pressure would explode if we did.
Harrison Barnes -

Congratulations to Ames’ Harrison Barnes on his selection of North Carolina. That’s AWESOME. What a well-spoken young man as well. Sorry to the Cyclone fans that hoped he might stay in Ames, that surely would have packed Hilton every game. On the plus side, you’ll have the chance to watch Barnes at the highest level of basketball. It doesn’t get much better than playing at North Carolina.
I knew he was a phenomenal basketball player, but his press conference really impressed me. Well-spoken…confident, not arrogant…and smart…good for him. He’s got all the tools, skill, and attitude to be a star.
You don’t think the Ames gym will be packed every night to see Barnes play this season, do ya? It’s going to be one of the hottest tickets in town!
Buffalo Wild Wings -
Jennifer and I got some BW2 (that’s pronounced B-W-Squared)…24 boneless wings…mmm…so good. 12 Spicy Garlic, 6 Asian Zing, and 6 Mango Habanero. Note: My friend Sully and I did the “Blazin’” wings on our Wing Tour. There is no doubt that we could have done their “Blazin’” challenge and got our picture on the well…heck, we could have done it twice. Maybe that will be my next food challenge.
AWESOME is as AWESOME does!

Sorry, Kurt, but you are SOOO wrong about Ferentz’s “play not to lose” approach. I love Kirk Ferentz, but you absolutely HAVE TO go for it in that situation!!! The Hawks had the momentum, almost a minute left on the clock, good field position, and a timeout left…and Vandenberg was playing great. You cannot take the Buckeyes into overtime on purpose on THEIR turf…you just can’t. You’ve got to go for the jugular. I was totally freaking out when they were letting time run off the clock — I could not believe my eyes, could not believe they were going to let the opportunity pass them by. All we needed was to get close enough for a freaking field goal to win the game and be on our way to the Rose Bowl. And I’m NOT a hind-sighter because I didn’t like it even as it was happening…I was seriously freaking out. My hubby said there was no way the Hawks could win at The ‘Shoe in OT, but I was still holding out hope that we would pull it out in the end, even though I had a bad, bad feeling about it. And… you cannot blame the OT loss on Vandenberg and his “rookie” mistake. I HATE it when people call it a freaking rookie mistake when I see NFL QBs do the same thing almost every week (Hmmmm… can we say Rodgers?). Anyway, the run wasn’t working all game so why would it suddenly work in OT? Ferentz does need to be more aggressive and he should have had more faith in his rookie QB because Vandenberg looked MUCH better in that game than Stanzi ever has. And I truly believe the Hawks would have won if they had gone for it in the 4th quarter…everything was in our favor at that moment. Why allow the Buckeyes (who were sticking it on the run & playing on their own turf) an opportunity to have the ball again if you don’t have to? That mentality is what separates good teams from CHAMPIONSHIP teams. And that’s all I’ll say about that.
That being said, the Hawks have had a fantastic season and there is a lot to be proud of with this team. The team never, ever gives up. So many times they could have hung their heads and thought the game was over, but they always, always come back (even when they don’t win, they come back & make it a nail-biter). They’ve almost been the death of me nearly every weekend, but it sure is exciting to watch. GO HAWKS!!!

Hey Julie,
I know…I should have and I meant to….luckily, our cats haven’t gotten into the walls yet. Man, that would stink….I l like the “Gruesome Two-somes” idea of just throwing more cats into the wall after it, hilarious.
Thanks Julie!
