Happy Veterans Day, the 4th Kind, and Songs Stuck in My Head

From Kurt…

Happy Veterans Day -

Happy Veterans Day…especially to my pops. He was over in Vietnam serving the Navy…he worked on a medical supply ship, so luckily he didn’t have to do any hand-to-hand combat. I’m very proud of my dad…he’s the best dad…and he gave a great service for his country during his tenure in the Navy! Love ya dad.

That’s my mom, me, Jennifer, and my pops!

A huge happy Veterans Day to all the vets out there. Thank you!

The Fourth Kind -

Last night, Jennifer and I went and saw that movie “The Fourth Kind”. It’s AWESOME. You can be a believer of alien abduction…or not…I didn’t really think that the movie was trying to sway you one way or another. It just showed actual video of really weird encounters/experiences. Some of the footage is absolutely incredible…and very eerie…oh, and disturbing. I’m definitely convinced some weird sutff is happening (or happened) in Nome, Alaska.

There are a few jump-in-your-seat moments…but mostly, I think I just watched with my jaw hitting the floor. Some of it was just absolutely incredible. I would definitely recommend going to see this.

Oh, I’m now wary of owls…oh, and Jennifer and I both woke up at 3:30 this morning…just like when the abductions happen in the movie…so we’ve got that going for us, which is nice. Ugh. (we can chalk that one up to the cats though).

I must also give props to the 7:05 movie crowd at Jordan Creek…everyone seemed to understand the movie rules…no talking, no phones, no kicking seats…well done.

Since I went and saw “The Fourth Kind”, I thought I’d drop a list of some of my favorite movies starring aliens.

Best Alien Movies - In no real order, really

1 - Spaceballs - You can’t beat Barf…or Pizza the Hutt. One of the best movies ever. (Note:  I will include Star Wars, Return of the Jedi, and the re-make of the Star Trek movie in this entry as well…the other Star Wars movies, well, you can have them, I’m not a big fan of the others).

2 - Species - Natasha Hensridge is topless throughout most of this movie…now THAT’s a good alien movie.

3 - Men and Black - Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith were the definition of cool that year. Me seeing it in the theaters 3 times? That was the definition of not being cool that year.

4 - E.T. - Well of course this little goober had to get on the list.

5 - Cocoon - It has Steve Guttenberg and Wilford Brimley it…and Olympia Dukakis, (insert sexy growl here…and of course I’m kidding…what, did you think I was going to include “Batteries Not Included” as well? Seriously…what was it with making films for the elderly that year?)

6 - Predator - Arnold’s finest film.

7 - Aliens - I had to pair Aliens and Predator together this way…you’ll see why in a moment.

8 - Cloverfield - Even though the shaky-cam is hard to handle at times, this movie is AWESOME!

9 - Flight of the Navigator - This was the first time I ever saw what Twisted Sister looked like. Man, I used to love this movie….Rice-a-Roni, the San Francisco Treat, ding ding!

10 - Galaxy Quest - People either really like this movie, or despise it, I really like it.

Honorable Mentions - Earth Girls Are Easy, The Last Starfighter, and Muppets From Space

The Worst Aliens Movie -

1 - Alien v. Predator - Both are great movies, but when you pair the two together in the same movie, you get a big bag of suck.

2 - K-Pax - This might be on of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. I’m angry just thinking about the 2 hours I wasted watching it. Kevin Spacey, most of movies are horrible.

3 - Pitch Black/Chronicles of Riddick - Both star Vin Diesel, what a coincidence.

4 - Battlefield Earth - Widely regarded as one of the worst movies of all-time, but hey, John Travolta has alien dreadlocks!

5 - Signs - I was so excited to see this movie, but seriously? All you have to do is throw water at an alien…and then hit it with a bat. This movie could have been so much better.

Movies with aliens that I haven’t seen that didn’t get included on the list…Monsters vs. Aliens, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and District 9.

Alcohol Poisoning -

I feel bad for the Drake student that had to go to the hospital for alcohol poisoning. That sucks. I will say that times have changed though…I honestly think I suffered through alcohol poisoning every weekend while I was at Drake. I’m not proud of that…but I’m not disappointed by that either, I had a blast.

From a friend of and me drinking an entire bottle of Jim Beam (straight, no chasers) together…to polishing off 1/4 bottle of Goldschlager, I know darn well the effects of alcohol poisoning, I never would have thought about going to the hospital though. Some friends drag you home, you puke for 2 hours in the shower, wake up…and do it again.

Will You Please Vanish From Our Planet? -

Carrie Prejean, I’m looking in your general direction…will you please shut up and go away? How you are still even in the public eye is a mystery to us all.

You’ve brought this all on yourself. If you just disappeared, no one would bother you. Here’s why people don’t like you…you made a huge fuss about a question in a beauty pageant that nobody cares about…it all would gone away, but you wanted to make it a big deal….then…you said you were the wholesome girl…but then your topless photos showed up…then, it was revealed that the beauty pageant paid for your boobs, and didn’t pay them back…oh, and then you kept preaching about how you’ve been attacked for no reason…oh, then the sex tape comes out. You’re a hypocrite Carrie…and you’re one of the most awful people ever.

Oh…and the only one who’s stood by her side (besides Sean Hannity, which is just weird…I’m not a fan at all of Hannity, but he is a respected journalist, but you have a segment on your show with a failed beauty pageant contestant…that’s a shot against your credibility)…but the only person that’s stood by you is Donald Trump, and apparently, your new book disses him. Real nice Carrie. You’re awful.

Maybe it was the question that ruined your hopes of winning…but maybe it was also the talent contest…because you have no talent.

Jim Carrey -

Yesterday, I received a comment from Michele about any greatness of Jim Carrey should include his “Fire Marshal Bill” character from “In Living Color”. Absolutely…however, my favorite character Jim Carrey did on “In Living Color” was “Background Guy”. It was so simple…so sillly…so perfect.

Tunes-Day -

Two songs from yesterday worth buying on I-Tunes

1 - Leona Lewis - “Happy” - Another great song from Leona!

2 - One Republic - “Good Life” - Seriously, this One Republic album is going to be AWESOME. All 4 songs that they’ve released from it have been terrific.

Songs Stuck in My Head -

The past two days have been very draining…these two songs have been stuck in my head the entire time…

1 - Britney Spears - “3” - This is one of the worst songs I’ve ever heard…and my wife really likes it. I hear it too much.

2 - The Ask.com commercial theme - Who hates this song, I do, I do!

 Bon Jovi Songs -

Bon Jovi’s new album was released yesterday…I haven’t listened to it…I’m not really a big fan of the “We Were Made to Follow” song that’s out right now. Most of his stuff lately has been sounding the same…plus, his dip into the country genre sort of lost me….that being said though…

Here’s my Top 10 Bon Jovi Songs of All-Time

1. Living in  a Prayer - Of course.

2. Wanted Dead or Alive - Let’s ride!

3. I’ll Be There For You - What? Me enjoying sappy 80s power ballad? Yeah, I’m shocked too, ha ha.

4. Raise Your Hands - I like simple rock songs.

5. Someday I’ll Be Saturday Night - Saturday night…a night apparently where I’m in bed by 9:00, what’s wrong with me?

6. Always - Oh look…a sappy 90s power ballad…yeah, I’m totally on board.

7. Blaze of Glory - When Mac and Charlie used this on their failed suicide video on “Always Sunny in Philadelphia”…it reminded me of the true greatness of this song.

8. Sleep When I’m Dead - Or, I’ll sleep from 10:00pm-3:46am…and then nap from 2p-3:15p. I need some sleep, sorry Bon Jovi.

9. Bad Medicine - One of the first rock songs I remember knowing all the lyrics to when I was 8.

10. Give Me Something For the Pain - One of the only gems on the “These Days” album…was that even the name of the album? That’s how not good it was.

AWESOME is as AWESOME does!

Alright Kurt, I must insist you immediately run to blockbusters and rent Close Encounters of the 3rd kind, it’s a classic. I agree mostly with all of your top alien picks but I’m sure you will include this one once you’ve seen it. Aliens vs Monsters- not worth writing home about. My son liked it but refuses to wear the 3-D glasses throughout the movie and frankly I’m tired of all these movies coming out in 3-D. Not much jumps out at me for the extra cost of the glasses. I just hope this fad of 3-D flicks quickly fades away. Oh I listened to your pop quiz on the way into work and my significant other would be named McStinky and he’s proud of that bodily function attribute and refuses to take beano. Any advice from others would be greatly appreciated! have a great day!

Kurt, I am going to have go ahead and admit now that I actually kind of love the Ask.com “I do, I do” song. I know I shouldn’t, but when it comes on, I look at my cat and start singing it as loud as possible to him.

I’m PRETTY sure he loves it.

  3. Nathan Ritz Says:

    Signs… I couldn’t agree more.

Jim Carey back in the In Living Color Days was my idol. I LOVED that show. I am going to buy all of the DVDs right now… I’m an impulse shopper what can I say.

After owning a PS3 for a year now I learned last night how to play Blu-Rays on it, and also got NetFlix on it as well. First time I used it. Lots of buttons on the controller… touch the wrong one and your screwed in my opinion.

Bon Jovi… I met him when I worked for John Kerry in 04. He is a really cool guy. I dind’t know many of his songs at the time, but became a fan of most of your top 10 after hearing him play acoustic (Him + Guitar and a violinist = great music) for about a week.

I do I do… dont ever do that again. I thankfully avoided that commercial until just now…. I always get the chicken dance stuck in my head.

What do you think of the Bad Romance Vid? Jake has watched it at least 30 tiemes I think… Obsessed.

  4. alex Says:

I don’t know, Fire Marshall Bill put Jim on the Map!

Happy Veterans Days, And thanks for all who’s served our Country!

  5. Karess Says:

How can you possibly leave off Bon Jovi’s classic RUNAWAY from your list? And the video is the best, cheesiest 80’s video!!
